The Buzz, 9-29: Things to Come
First they came...

By Paul Ben-Itzak
The Dance Insider

This being an arts publication and all, I thought you wouldn't mind if I shared with you a poem, "First they came...," which I could swear I first encountered understudying "Brecht on Brecht," comprising some of the writings of Bertolt Brecht, but the website Wikipedia corrects me that it is attributed to Pastor Martin Niemoller, who lived it.

"When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

"When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

"When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

"When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out."
