Flash Review 1, 3-20: Faster Pussycat!
Thrill! Thrill!
Moving with Brian Brooks & Co.
By Chris Dohse
Copyright 2001 Chris Dohse
In a space filled by a neon orange
circle and a circle of orange light bulbs, a flip book can become a sideshow one-ring
circus. Brian Brooks can become a Vorticist dynamo. His Brian Brooks Moving Company
dancers, seen Sunday at Williamsburg Art Nexus in "Faster," can walk up walls
where there are no walls. Video projections can occur and they do, accompanied
by carousel music.
Orange circus peanuts circle audacity
animation. Gymnastics stop motion.
Increasingly complex, organized out
of simple organic Streb components, with daring liftwork and ingenuity. Will they
collide? Nikolais movement in a Schlemmer state of beatitude. Stasis and inertia,
things learned from subatomic particles. Oddly haunting semaphore. Backward too
long. That central dance was very good. But backward too long.
Danced by Brian Brooks, Tony Guglietti,
Clint Lutes, Weena Pauly, LiYana Silver. Music composed by John Stone. Video by
Sarah Browder. Costumes by Russell Aubrey. Design by Paul Szabo. Lighting by Brian
Fassett.
My lesbian friend said, "Brian Brooks's
ass is so perky you could set a beer on the shelf of it!" Then she said, "You
better fucking quote me on that!"
