Flash News, 4-20: Birthday Party
Paris Opera Dancer to Pay Homage to the One Who Started it All

"The elegiac chooses the symbolic and abstract language of dance steps.... With her body she traces hieroglyphics, legible signs made indelible through her emotion."

-- Andre Levinson on Marie Taglioni

PARIS -- To mark her 200th birthday, Marie Taglioni, the dancer on whose magic toes it all began, will have a special visitor Friday, April 23 at the Montmartre Cemetery, bearing a very special gift. Sophie Parcen, a dancer with the Paris Opera Ballet, the company that Taglioni elevated when she elevated the art of dance by becoming the first to use pointe artistically, will place a new wreath on Taglioni's deteriorating grave, a wreath made of her own pointe shoes and more pairs donated by the women of The Australian Ballet . The shoes were mailed to Paris by Bloch, the Australia-based international shoe and apparel company. Those interested in joining the party will meet between 5 and 5:15 p.m. Friday, just inside the entrance of the cemetery, at the end of the rue Rachel. (Metro Blanche; the nearest landmark is the Moulin Rouge.)
