Flash News, 10-24: Doug's New Sound
Mr. Rodgers and Mr. Hammerstein, Meet Mr. Elkins

By Paul Ben-Itzak
Copyright 2006 The Dance Insider

Doug Elkins, with Mark Dendy the most musically astute choreographic mind of his generation, has met his next mountain, setting his sites on the score of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music," in a suite of dances premiering December 8 at DancemOpolitan at Joe's Pub in New York City, produced by DancenOw/NYC in partnership with Joe's Pub.

"Fraulein Maria," subtitled "dances inspired by the greatest movie musical ever made," will star downtown legends Archie Burnett, Keely Garfield, Jen Nugent and David Parker, as well as members of the House of Ninja. The work, being presented with the assistance of longtime Elkins associate Amy Cassello, will not be a literal interpretation of the score, made into a movie in 1965 starring Julie Andrews, but rather will use the words and music as an inspiration for movement, says Elkins. "These are songs of celebration and determination that can incorporate big movement."

Performances are Friday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 9 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.. For ticket information, please call 212-967-7555.
