Georgians Storm the U.S. With Stunning Dancing

SAN FRANCISCO -- I could have told the producers to forget about trying to tie all the singing and dancing together with a story line or using high tech lighting equipment. In the case of "The Legend of Tamar," performed last weekend at the Orpheum Theater by the Georgian National Singing and Dancing Ensemble, these were distractions, but only minor ones because these artists are so brilliant and powerful that nothing could diminish what they do on stage.

The women were stunningly beautiful in their gorgeous costumes, and the men so fierce and passionate in their athletic dancing that I was overwhelmed. The singing, too, was of an extremely high caliber.

I went to this concert at the last minute when a friend called to say they were papering the house because the publicist hadn't gotten the word out enough to have a decent audience. So I wasn't planning on reviewing it. But readers in Orange County, Pasadena, San Diego, Chicago, New York City or Washington DC -- all cities on the company's current tour -- should check its web site for dates and go see this. I came away feeling exhilarated, and remember I'm a dance critic, so that means quite a lot.
