Summer Study Guide To find out how to list your summer program on the most popular destination for dancers on the Web, e-mail publisher Paul Ben-Itzak.
Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Ballet Workshop for Dancers and Choreographers. Program director: Michael Vernon. Location: Bloomington, IN. Dates: Session I: June 16-21; Session II: June 23-28; Both Sessions: June 16-28. This course, intended to give both ballet dancers and choreographers a chance to study with a world-class faculty, will also provide an opportunity for choreographers to develop and explore ideas for choreography in a studio setting, and on stage. The two weeks will be devoted to working on the dancer's ballet technique and the choreographer's vision and creative range of movement. For more information, click here.
The New York Baroque Dance Company Summer Workshop in Historical Dance. June 16-22, Goucher College. When Ben Harkarvy revamped the summer intensive at Juilliard, he introduced ballroom dance as a first step in learning about dance rhythms and how to dance with another person. When Louis Horst (instructor of Martha Graham and other early modern choreographers) insisted on an understanding of dance forms from Bach and Handel for anyone interested in dance composition, he turned to minuets and sarabandes. Social dances are at the heart of all dance. Learning something about their history is invaluable, as well as just being fun! For more info including brochure and application form, click here.
